Does Los Sueños Have a Beach? An Honest Answer for Visitors

Los Sueños Resort& Marina gets a lot of search traffic from travelers who want to know one thing before they book: does it have a beach?

The honest answer is no, not in the way most people picture when they book a beach resort. Los Sueños sits on a hillside bluff overlooking Herradura Bay, elevated above the water with ocean views rather than oceanfront access. There is no stretch of sand immediately adjacent to the resort’s vacation rental properties.

But the beach story at Los Sueños is more nuanced than a simple no. Guests here get something that matters more than a generic strip of sand: a private Beach Club with a dedicated pool and sunning area, plus a calm swimmable public beach that’s less than 5 minutes from the gates. Here’s exactly what to expect.

The Los Sueños Beach Club

The resort’s signature water amenity is the Los Sueños Beach Club, inaugurated in 2001 and spanning 4.6 acres on the water. This is not a public beach. It is for the exclusive use of resort residents, their guests, and vacation renters whose properties include club access.

The Beach Club features a large freeform swimming pool (the main draw for families with kids), a spacious jacuzzi, a swim-up bar, an elevated white sand sunning area, beach volleyball, a children’s play area, an activity and yoga pavilion, and Al Fresco Restaurant with an open kitchen and outdoor patio that faces the sunset over the ocean.

If you’re staying in a professionally managed Los Sueños condo or villa, your booking typically includes Beach Club passes. Most condos come with two passes. Confirm this with your property manager before arrival, since day passes are not available to the general public.

The water at the Beach Club is protected by Herradura Bay, which means calmer conditions than the open Pacific beaches down the road. That’s a genuine advantage for families, but one detail matters more than any other: the club’s official rules state there are no lifeguards on duty. Swimming is at your own risk, in both the pool and the bay, and children need direct adult supervision the entire time.

Access: who gets in, and how

Access is narrower than most people assume. The Beach Club is for the exclusive use of residents, their guests, and condominium renters inside the resort, and the official resort site confirms each property has been issued two Club passes. Registered homeowners and their immediate family may also request a personalized VIP Home Owner card.

A valid Beach Club pass is required to enter and to eat at Al Fresco. Practically, that means you collect passes from your property manager at check-in and hand them back before checkout. Day passes are not sold to the general public, so if you’re staying outside the gates, the Beach Club is not available to you — Playa Herradura is your beach instead.

The pools and grounds

The centerpiece is one large freeform swimming pool with a swim-up bar, so you can order a drink without getting out of the water. A separate spacious jacuzzi sits alongside it, and the elevated white sand beach area faces the bay.

Beyond the water there’s a beach volleyball net, a children’s play area, a soccer field, large-scale outdoor games, and an activity and yoga pavilion. The published club rules are worth reading before you go: no glass anywhere, no running on pool decks, no jumping or diving, no loud or rough play, no speakers or loud music, and babies and toddlers must wear appropriate waterproof diapers. Lounge chairs may not be reserved, so seating is first-come.

Eating at Al Fresco

Al Fresco is the club’s restaurant, with an open kitchen, a wood-fire pizza oven, and an outdoor patio that faces the sunset. It’s open seven days a week until 7 PM. Worth flagging: the official menu lists the opening time inconsistently as both 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM, so plan around 11:30 AM if you’re counting on an early lunch.

The pizzas are authentic Napolitana style with a charred, crispy crust — the Classic Margherita runs ₡11,279 and the Hawaiian Waves with garlic shrimp and grilled pineapple is ₡12,411. On the Costa Rican side, the chifrijo (₡10,640) comes with chicharrones, rice, pico de gallo, cubaces beans, tortilla chips and avocado, and the sea bass ceviche is ₡12,042. Bigger plates include the NY Steak Bowl with a 10 oz New York strip (₡17,220) and a lobster roll (₡27,491). All prices include 13% sales tax and a 10% service fee. Delivery to the resort is available at 2630-4272 and is exempt from the service fee.

Playa Herradura: The Public Beach Right Outside the Gates

The moment you drive out of Los Sueños main gates and turn toward the ocean, you’re at Playa Herradura within 2 minutes. This is a public beach, free and open to everyone, with dark volcanic sand and calm bay water that’s among the most swimmable on the Central Pacific coast.

The bay is horseshoe-shaped, protected by headlands that block the dominant Pacific swells. The result is gentle, greenish water that local Costa Rican families from San José have been coming to for decades. Herradura is not a surf beach. The waves are small and soft, which is exactly why it’s popular with families and why it’s one of the few beaches in this stretch where you can actually float without fighting current.

At the beach you’ll find a few beachside restaurants (most meals in the $8 to $15 range), and kayak rentals are available. Parking is along the road; on weekends and holidays it can get crowded. There’s no lifeguard station, so swim with awareness of conditions.

From Los Sueños, it’s a 5-minute drive or about a 15-minute walk down to the beach. Most guests with vacation rentals keep a car or rent a golf cart for getting around the resort and reaching the beach.

What If You Want More Beach Options?

Playa Herradura is the closest and most convenient, but it’s not the only option within a short drive of Los Sueños. Here is how the alternatives compare.

Playa Jacó is about 13 minutes south. It has stronger surf and is not ideal for young children or weak swimmers, but it’s a lively beach with surf shops, restaurants, and a more active town atmosphere. The north end has gentler waves for beginners.

Playa Hermosa is a world-class surf beach about 20 minutes south. Do not swim here unless you’re an experienced surfer. The waves are powerful and consistent enough to host international competitions. It’s a spectacular beach to watch or photograph, not to wade into.

Playa Blanca and Playa Manta are reached by driving north along the Costanera highway toward Punta Leona. These are quieter beaches with lighter crowds and good swimming conditions. All beaches in Costa Rica are public by law, so you can access them even though they’re adjacent to resort properties.

Who Los Sueños Works For (and Who It Doesn’t)

Los Sueños is not a traditional beachfront resort. If the image you have in mind is stepping out of your condo directly onto sand, this is not that place. The resort’s amenities center on the marina, the golf course, the Beach Club pool, and the dining options within the resort. The ocean is visible and beautiful from the bluff, but it requires a short drive or walk to reach.

What Los Sueños does offer is a complete resort experience: gated security, a private Beach Club, a first-government-approved marina with 200 wet slips and dry storage, an 18-hole championship golf course, multiple dining options, and vacation rentals that range from 2-bedroom condos to 6-bedroom villas. Families with young children tend to love it precisely because the Beach Club pool gives them something the open-ocean beaches cannot: a contained, calm water environment with a restaurant steps away — though with no lifeguards on duty, supervision is still entirely on you.

Anglers coming for sport fishing tournaments also benefit more than typical beach-seeking travelers. The marina is the anchor amenity, and the combination of world-class fishing, a private pool, and access to a calm bay beach covers most of what they need.

If your main goal is to be steps from the ocean with no car and no plans beyond sunrise walks on the sand, look at properties directly on Jacó Beach or head further north to Manuel Antonio. Los Sueños rewards a different kind of traveler: one who wants resort infrastructure, premium accommodations, and access to both a private pool environment and a calm bay beach within minutes.

The Bottom Line

Los Sueños Resort does not have a beach in the traditional resort sense. It sits on a bluff above Herradura Bay with ocean views but no direct sand access. What it does have is an exclusive Beach Club with pool and sunning area for guests, and a calm public beach at Playa Herradura that’s less than 5 minutes from the gates.
