About Golf in Costa Rica

La Iguana Golf Course at Los Sueños Resort is one of Central America's most unique championship courses: an 18-hole Ted Robinson Jr. design winding through primary and secondary rainforest with ocean views, elevation changes, and wildlife that occasionally steals golf balls. Scarlet macaws fly overhead, monkeys cross fairways between groups, and iguanas sun themselves on cart paths. This is tropical golf at its finest: challenging layout, impeccable maintenance, and the surreal experience of playing through a jungle ecosystem.

Insider Tips

Bring extra golf balls. The jungle is unforgiving, and iguanas have been known to carry off shiny Pro V1s thinking they're eggs. Budget 6-8 balls for an average round.

Book afternoon tee times (after 2pm) for discounted rates and better wildlife viewing. The heat is more intense, but monkeys and macaws are more active as the day cools.

Hire a caddie even if you normally don't. They read greens expertly, know exactly where balls land in the jungle (saving you strokes and frustration), and offer local knowledge that elevates the entire experience. Caddie fee is $30-40 plus tip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to play golf at Los Sueños? +
Green fees run $185-210 for 18 holes depending on season and tee time, with twilight rates (after 2pm) dropping to $135-150. Cart rental is included, caddie fees are $30-40 plus tip (highly recommended), and club rentals are available for $60. Resort guests and property owners get discounted rates and priority tee times.
Do I need to book a tee time in advance at La Iguana Golf Course? +
Yes, especially during peak season (December-April) when tee times book 3-5 days out. Resort guests and Los Sueños property owners get priority booking and can reserve further in advance. Public tee times are available but limited; book as early as possible through the pro shop or resort concierge.
Can I rent golf clubs at Los Sueños? +
Yes, the pro shop rents full sets of Callaway clubs for $60 per round (men's and women's available). Quality is solid, but if you're picky about equipment or play to a low handicap, bring your own sticks. The course has a practice range and putting greens if you want to test rental clubs before your round.
What is the dress code at La Iguana Golf Course? +
Standard golf attire: collared shirts, golf shorts or pants, and soft-spiked golf shoes. No denim, no athletic shorts, no tank tops. The club enforces dress code but isn't overly stuffy . This is tropical golf, not Augusta. Most players wear breathable performance fabrics because of the heat and humidity.
Should I hire a caddie at Los Sueños golf course? +
Absolutely. La Iguana caddies are exceptional: they read greens expertly, know exactly where errant shots land in the jungle (saving you strokes and lost balls), and offer local knowledge about wildlife and course strategy. Caddie fee is $30-40 plus tip, and they'll save you 3-5 strokes minimum. Well worth it even if you normally don't use caddies.
What wildlife will I see playing golf at Los Sueños? +
Scarlet macaws fly over the course in pairs (morning and late afternoon), three-toed sloths hang in trees near several fairways, howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys cross between holes, and iguanas sun themselves on cart paths. The course is carved through rainforest, so wildlife sightings are guaranteed; bring a camera and expect the occasional delay while monkeys cross your fairway.
Is La Iguana Golf Course difficult? +
It's a legitimate championship layout that respects good players: 6,900 yards from the tips, slope rating in the mid-130s, water on 12 holes, narrow fairways bordered by jungle, and fast undulating greens. Mid-handicappers will score fine from appropriate tees, but this isn't a resort course where everyone breaks 90. Accuracy matters more than distance because wayward shots disappear into rainforest.
